Job Description

Block is one company built from many blocks, all united by the same purpose of economic empowerment. The blocks that form our foundational teams — People, Finance, Counsel, Hardware, Information Security, Platform Infrastructure Engineering, and more — provide support and guidance at the corporate level. They work across business groups and around the globe, spanning time zones and disciplines to develop inclusive People policies, forecast finances, give legal counsel, safeguard systems, nurture new initiatives, and more. Every challenge creates possibilities, and we need different perspectives to see them all. Bring yours to Block.

The Role

The Advanced Insights and Modeling (AIM) team is a high-impact, business-savvy group of builders—comprising machine learning engineers, data scientists, data engineers, and business strategists—who blend cutting-edge machine learning with deep product and financial insight. Known for high standards, rapid execution, and full-stack model ownership, they deliver scalable, high-value solutions across domains. AIM thrives on curiosity, bold thinking, and collaboration, fostering a magnetic, non-corporate culture. Trusted across the company, they are a go-to partner for insight, speed, and transformative business impact.

The AIM team plays a pivotal role in developing and scaling AI-driven predictive metrics that inform strategic investment decisions and drive operational excellence across the company. These metrics such as revenue inflow and outflow, active customer counts, customer lifetime value, and sales prospect value are foundational to planning and execution across Finance, Marketing, Sales, Product, and Risk, enabling high-confidence, data-informed decisions at scale.

We apply a wide range of machine learning techniques, from interpretable models like XGBoost to cutting-edge neural networks, to forecast customer value, segment opportunities, and optimize strategic plays. Our work goes beyond modeling: we contribute to Block's broader AI ecosystem by building shared infrastructure and integrating our models into AI interfaces that empower internal teams to explore data, generate insights, and take effective action.

As a trusted partner across Finance, Sales, Marketing, Product Management, and Risk, we also invest heavily in scalable ML systems and robust data pipelines to support Block's long-term growth.

We're looking for a Senior Economist with deep expertise in value prediction and a passion for driving impact at scale. If you're excited about shaping the future of predictive modeling at Block, we'd love to hear from you.

You Will

    • Contribute to and help shape Block's metrics prediction systems to support strategic growth initiatives.
    • Design, build, and improve ML solutions that drive Block's core value prediction models for both prospective and existing customers.
    • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders—including Finance, Sales, Marketing, and go-to-market teams—to support investment decisions with data-driven insights.
    • Integrate third-party data sources to enhance model accuracy and close data feedback loops.
    • Stay current on the latest ML advancements and bring innovative ideas to continuously evolve our measurement and prediction capabilities.

You Have

    • 5+ years of experience in machine learning software development, with a solid track record of building and maintaining production-level ML systems.
    • Strong understanding of the end-to-end ML lifecycle, including data processing, feature engineering, model development, deployment, and monitoring.
    • Hands-on experience with value prediction systems, such as customer lifetime value or revenue forecasting, using both classical ML techniques (e.g., XGBoost) and deep learning methods.
    • Comfortable working collaboratively within a team and partnering with business stakeholders to translate requirements into ML solutions.
    • Effective communicator, able to clearly explain complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
    • A growth mindset, with enthusiasm for learning, sharing ideas, and contributing to the broader ML and AI strategy at Block.
