Job Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

The Role

We are looking for a Staff/Principal Software Engineer to join our team focused on advancing Square's enterprise capabilities. In this role you will help establish technical architecture and multi-year strategy for our enterprise offerings while partnering with teams across the company to define reliable and scalable unified experiences for our largest customers.

You Will

    • Lead system design and architecture across broad technical domains, delivering durable, scalable, and secure systems that meet the evolving needs of F&B sellers.
    • Identify and solve Square's most critical technical challenges on the web—such as cross-product integration, high-performance user interfaces at scale, and delivering seamless, end-to-end experiences across the platform.
    • Develop long-term architectural strategies that improve developer experience, enable velocity, and reduce operational risk across web surfaces.
    • Influence engineering direction across multiple teams by writing high-quality design documents, contributing to RFCs, and leading collaborative technical decision-making.
    • Drive technical execution for critical product and platform initiatives, often working across team boundaries to align infrastructure, frontend, and backend layers.
    • Lead modernization and migration efforts—incrementally evolving our architecture toward best-in-class systems without service disruption.

You Have

    • 12+ years of engineering industry experience building for the Web, with a BS Degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
    • Proven record of successfully delivering large features (spanning ~1+ year) from start to finish with strong collaboration, communication, and ownership.
    • Demonstrated experience leading architecture and system design for cross-functional, multi-quarter projects.
    • 5+ years experience building with React at scale.
    • A sense of customer empathy and desire to influence the product direction.
    • Understand and curiosity in creating well thought out, scalable, low-latency, global systems.

Technologies We Use and Teach

    • JavaScript, Typescript
    • React, Ember, Storybook / Chromatic
    • MySQL, NoSQL, Redis, Kafka
    • AWS, GCP
    • Protocol Buffers, Bazel, Terraform, Kubernetes, Envoy
