Job Description

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn't work together.

So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omnichannel solutions – to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, offer buy now, pay later functionality, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Across it all, we've embedded financial services tools at the point of sale, so merchants can access a business loan and manage their cash flow in one place. Afterpay furthers our goal to provide omnichannel tools that unlock meaningful value and growth, enabling sellers to capture the next generation shopper, increase order sizes, and compete at a larger scale.

Today, we are a partner to sellers of all sizes – large, enterprise-scale businesses with complex operations, sellers just starting, as well as merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers grow, so do our solutions. There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We're building a significant, meaningful, and lasting business, and we are helping sellers worldwide do the same.

As a Senior Regulatory Compliance Program Manager on the Square Hardware team, you will be the technical authority responsible for bringing our innovative products to a global market. This is a deeply technical, hands-on role for a leader who thrives on complex engineering challenges. You will be our expert in the lab, leading testing for everything from RF and EMC to product safety, while also steering the strategic programs that ensure our designs are compliant from day one. Success in this role requires a dual-threat expert: a meticulous engineer who can debug complex issues at the hardware level, and a strategic program manager who can coordinate between world-class engineering teams, test labs, and executive leadership.

All candidates must be local to the Bay area, since there is occasional travel to the Oakland office.

You Will:

    • Own and manage the end-to-end certification process for new products, from defining requirements and creating detailed test plans to managing execution with test labs and contract manufacturers. This encompasses the deliverables and their impacts on program milestones across all development stages (Proto, EVT, DVT, PVT).
    • Lead testing and debugging for emissions, immunity, radio frequency performance, and product safety. You will manage and lead cross-functional teams, contract manufacturers, accessory suppliers, and test labs simultaneously to resolve issues and complete testing.
    • Drive design-for-compliance initiatives from the earliest architectural stages, embedding with Electrical, Mechanical, and RF engineering teams to identify and mitigate regulatory risks proactively.
    • Translate complex regulatory challenges into clear, actionable guidance to lead the technical teams and concise summaries for executive leadership, ensuring alignment at every level. A deep understanding of regulatory standards and proficient research capability is required.
    • Manage global environmental compliance programs, such as WEEE, battery, and packaging regulations, by partnering with cross-functional teams and external experts.
    • Build and maintain a robust certification document repository and cultivate strategic partnerships with test labs and certification bodies to enhance our capabilities.

Qualifications

You Have:

    • BS and/or MS in Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline.

      • Radio Technologies: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NFC, and cellular (SAR).
      • Product Safety: UL/IEC 62368-1 and other related safety standards.
    • 5+ years of experience.
    • Proven experience using lab equipment including for debugging and validation, including network & spectrum analyzers, signal generators.
